Communication That Protects

By Gabrielle Christina, Project Assistant

Cybercrime is on the rise, with Florida ranking in the top 3 states for reported incidents. As AI makes scams more convincing, even savvy businesses and individuals are falling victim to fraud and ransomware.

At SMPR, we’ve helped clients navigate the communication challenges that come with cyberattacks. From guiding messaging to advising on how to speak with audiences and stakeholders, we’ve been called in to help public and private organizations during this type of crisis.

Through our work, we’ve connected with cybersecurity experts who’ve helped inform both our team and our clients. Most recently, SMPR President and Partner Heidi Otway sat down with Danny Jenkins, CEO of ThreatLocker, on the Fluent in Floridian podcast. He shared how even major players, such as airlines, hospitals, and cities, can be brought down by a single scam email.

If that can happen to large organizations, Florida’s small businesses have even more reason to stay alert. Here are expert tips and resources that can help businesses protect themselves before they need to call us.

1. Educate yourself and your team

Employees are the leading cause of data breaches, often serving as the primary point of access to internal systems. Strengthen workplace security by using multi-factor authentication and steering clear of unsecured software.

Jenkins warns against clicking suspicious links or uploading your ID. Legit agencies like the IRS won’t ask, so don’t fall for it.

2. Enact a zero-trust policy

Only grant access where it is absolutely necessary. This approach helps minimize vulnerabilities by ensuring that users and systems can’t access more than they need.

3. Hire a cybersecurity service provider

If you don’t have an in-house IT team, consider hiring a cybersecurity consultant or a service provider to support your security needs. Experts can assess risk, install protective systems, and develop response plans.

4. Cybersecurity insurance can protect you financially

This type of coverage helps your business or organization mitigate the financial risks associated with cyberattacks, data breaches, and other technology-related incidents. It can also cover the cost of retaining a crisis communications firm to help you notify and keep your stakeholders informed during an incident.

At SMPR, we take cybersecurity seriously. Our firm is protected by a trusted cybersecurity provider who helps us stay one step ahead of threats.

“Cybersecurity isn’t just a priority—it’s a necessity,” says Heidi Otway, President of SalterMitchell PR.

“Being prepared and having a crisis plan that includes stakeholder communications is critical during a cyberattack of any kind. We’re proud to have connections and working relationships with some of the top cybersecurity companies in Florida. They not only keep our systems secure and our data protected, but they also keep us up to date on the latest trends, resources, and best practices that help us counsel and guide our clients during this crisis situation.”

Cyber threats are growing fast, and Florida businesses are in the crosshairs. With the right tools and mindset, protection is possible. And if an attack does happen, we’re here to help you respond.
